Gel-K1011
In the late 2010s and early 2020s, ASICS brought back many of its heritage running shoes as comfortable lifestyle sneakers with a stylish nostalgic look. The Gel-Kayano series proved particularly popular, so, in 2024, the brand chose to honor this legacy by creating a retro-inspired silhouette known as the ASICS Gel-K1011.
The upper of the Gel-K1011 draws influences from various Y2K-era Kayano models, including the 5th, 6th and 10th iterations, which were all renowned sporting shoes when originally released. It features a mesh base with durable faux leather panels forming captivating geometric patterns over the forefoot and heel. Classic ASICS stripes add structure and style to the flanks, while textile tongue loops hold the laces securely in place. A minimum of 30% of the synthetic materials used to construct the upper are recycled, making the Gel-K1011 a sustainable option as well.
The sole unit of the Gel-K1011 is based around ASICS’ so-called Impact Guidance System, meaning that it is built to accentuate the runner’s natural gait. Its outsole tooling is taken from 2015’s Gel-Cumulus 17 to ensure exceptional traction, and a Guidance Line curves through its center, helping runners to achieve balance and control through each stride. A sturdy shank spans the midfoot for extra stability, while the midsole incorporates two types of foam cushioning: Flytefoam for soft comfort and a lightweight feel, and Flytefoam Propel, which powers each step with an energizing bounce. Lastly, visible Gel inserts bring high levels of impact protection to both the forefoot and heel.
The ASICS Gel-K1011 is intimately linked to Los Angeles clothing brand Gallery Dept. and its artistic founder, Josué Thomas, who unveiled the shoe at his ‘Mental Energy’ exhibition during the Art Basel Miami Beach event in December 2024. Working with the brand, he crafted three colorways inspired by and celebrating themes of movement, cultural connection and craft. Each tells a compelling story of his journey as an artist through vibrant tones and carefully thought out details that include a custom insole and Gallery Dept. heel tag. The shoe even owes its name to the visionary designer as the number 1011 is a nod to the apartment where he unearthed his love for sport and fitness.
While not all of these elements made it across to the general release of the ASICS Gel-K1011, the overall design has the same nostalgic appeal, with stylishly layered paneling, classy branding and crisp color-blocking. Underfoot, the glossy Gel cushioning brings an eye-catching sheen to the sole, and the striking tread lines complete the sneaker’s dynamic look.
In paying homage to iconic shoes from the ASICS archives, the Gel-K1011 evokes an irresistible retro esthetic. Its use of modern cushioning technologies provides comfort and support for daily wear, while Josué Tomas’ artistic flair also ensures that it stands out as a memorable item of contemporary fashion.
