Following the release of the original New Balance 990 in 1982, fans of the premium running shoe had to wait another 16 years until an updated version came out. In 1998, they were rewarded for their patience as the 990v2 arrived with the latest technology and a distinctive new look to match.

A true evolution of its predecessor, the New Balance 990v2 is made from a combination of mesh and suede for a soft, breathable feel around the foot. The overlays have been reshaped from the original to reveal a little more of the mesh underlayer, and reflective elements have been added alongside sophisticated branding effects that proclaim the fact that the shoe is made in the USA.

The tread pattern on the outsole has also been reworked, with slip-resistant rubber providing fantastic grip underfoot. New Balance’s ABZORB cushioning has been used to make the midsole, its blend of rubber and foam creating a lightweight cushion underneath the foot that is both shock-absorbing and incredibly comfortable.

The midsole technology of the New Balance 990v2 gives it an intriguing visual character as part of the ABZORB cushioning can be seen sticking out of the heel in a curvaceous bubble that matches the similarly rounded shapes along the sides of the midsole. Combined with the premium materials and elegant embroidery of the upper, this makes it a stylish sequel to the classic 990 model.
